The project:
Macmahon has been engaged to perform all limestone mining activities at Lafarge’s Ewekoro cement plant in Nigeria, West Africa for at least 78 months (6.5 years). The contract also contains an option for Lafarge to extend the services for a further two years.
This project is Macmahon’s first contract in West Africa, adding geographic diversity to current operations in the Australasian region.
Scope of work:
The mining activities at Ewekoro include:
- Overburden removal, or the removal of all soil, clay and mineral materials to enable limestone of suitable quality to be exposed ready for blasting. This includes the clearing and grubbing of vegetation;
- Drilling and blasting;
- Excavation and transport of limestone and shale material to the Lafarge crushing plants;
- Upgrade and maintenance of quarry roads; and
- Other support activities including block breaking operations, water spraying for limitation of dust emissions, and re-fuelling operations on site.
