The project:

This is the first contract Macmahon undertook for French company Lafarge and is a 5 year extension to the original contract, which started in December 2003. 

Kanthan is 200 km north of Kuala Lumpur in the state of Perak and has been in operation for the past 38 years. In recent times, the cement plant has been upgraded to incorporate two kilns, one of which is the largest single kiln operated by Lafarge at any of its 117 cement plants world-wide. Kanthan works produces three million tonnes of cement a year, requiring a limestone raw feed volume of about 4.2 million tonnes.

Scope of work:

As the sole mining contractor on site, Macmahon carries out a wide range of activities. The mining contract started on December 1, 2003, with the main activities being drill and blast, load, haul and dump to the client's two primary crushing plants, which have a combined capacity of 2,000 tph.

Macmahon’s open cut operation at Kanthan has won Lafarge’s “Contractor of the Year” award for four consecutive years.
