David Johnson
Marks 20 years of service

This year marks an incredible 20-year milestone for David Johnson, a valued member of our Raise Drilling team whose career journey with Macmahon began back in 2005.

David came to us from a diamond drilling background, initially joining Australian Raise Drilling before moving across to Macmahon Raise Drilling. Since then, he’s worked across multiple states and sites including Mt Isa, George Fisher, and Leinster as well as various locations across New South Wales, Western Australia and South Australia.

As a raise drill operator, David operates and maintains raise bore machines, using specially designed cutters to break through hard rock and create vertical or inclined shafts that are critical to underground mine development.

A proud and experienced team member, David spent over a decade as a Leading Hand across Western Australia and Queensland before choosing to return to the drill in pursuit of a better roster and salary. Today’s he’s a respected member of the team at Olympic Dam.

Working for Macmahon at Olympic Dam is great. There are good people that make me feel valued and welcome.”

Throughout his two decades with Macmahon, David has seen plenty of change – especially when it comes to safety and technology.

“When I started, raise drilling was much more manual – now we’ve got remote monitoring systems, digital shift reports, and onboard diagnostics that help us troubleshoot in real time,” he said. “Machine efficiency has improved a lot too, with automated breakout tools and smarter guidance systems that help us drill more accurately and safely.

He’s also completed a wide range of training on the job, including EWP for working at heights, IT skills and first aid, helping him adapt as the role has evolved.

While the work itself can present challenges, particular adjusting to different climates and ground conditions between Queensland and South Australia, David enjoys the stability of his current role and has no plans to move on.

I’m happy where I am and with the team I work with, Macmahon’s been a great place to build a career – they look after you.”

Outside of work, David enjoys life’s simple pleasures: fishing, watching the NRL, and spending quality time with his grandkids and wife Sharron, especially when they can sneak away for a holiday.

Thank you, David, for your incredible 20 years of service – your dedication and experience have made a lasting impact on Macmahon and those you work alongside.
