Shannon McKay-Borg
Superintendent, Ison Road

Shannon McKay-Borg learned the job from the ground up, and it shows. Now Superintendent on the Ison Road project in Victoria, he's the kind of leader who's done every step of the work he asks his crew to deliver.

Shannon joined Decmil as a concreter and moved into formwork and bridge construction, working his way up through the trades and learning the job from the inside.

“I started with the company as a concreter, moved into formwork and bridge construction, and worked my way up – learning the job pretty much from the ground.”

His day starts at six, checking in with supervisors to confirm there are no changes from the activities planned the day before. From there, he runs the daily construction meeting, oversees the driver program, and stays across quality and safety.

“I coordinate with the supervisors and the project team, making sure work flows well and everyone has the support they need to keep us moving.”

On any given day, Shannon could be overseeing road paving, concreting, footpaths, guardrail installation and drainage – and his hands-on background means he understands what the crew is dealing with at every step.

“I feel I understand the work because I’ve done it. It helps me support the crews, communicate clearly and make practical decisions on site.”

What he finds most rewarding is watching the work take shape – a stretch of ground turning into a finished road or bridge that will last for decades.

“Making sure the team has the support they need to keep things moving safely, and to a high standard, is what I enjoy most. Seeing the progress every day, and being part of building something that will last, is really rewarding.”

Shannon’s story is the Decmil East story – challenge accepted, then delivered, by people who learned the work the way the work gets done.
