Bianca has always been attracted to powered up cars. She initially considered studying to be a light vehicle mechanic, but when Bianca realised LV mechanics rely on electronic diagnostics, she opted for the HD Mechanic trade. Her interests are in diagnosing faults, pulling components apart and rebuilding them.
“Going home at the end of the day and knowing I rebuilt a 793 final drive by myself was so fulfilling,” said Bianca.
But after a while working as a HD Mechanic, Bianca realised she wanted to move into planning. Luckily, there was an opportunity to complete succession training and she was able to step into a new role. A position became available in July 2020 that Bianca applied for and was accepted. And she hasn’t looked back since!
As a Maintenance Planner, Bianca plans and schedules the work moving through the workshop and paint shed. She works with external repairers, follows up parts and schedules jobs to meet desired timelines.
Of course, there are challenges as a female working in a male-dominated environment. But Bianca recommends women consider a career as a HD Mechanic in the mining industry anyway. Bianca works in a small team in the workshop, which requires real teamwork and support.
“When it comes to needing help, everyone is open to sharing. You give advice to a teammate and vice versa. That’s what a team does,” said Bianca.
“I’m grateful to have the support of my supervisor and leading hand. They teach me things I may not necessarily consider. Every day is a lesson, but most of the time, the teacher is different, and sometimes, the teacher is me!”
Since joining the team, Bianca has learned the importance of work-life balance. She can focus on work at work, and when she finishes her shift, she spends time on other interests.
Bianca’s friends say that she lives a double life. By day she’s a Maintenance Planner, and by night she’s an independent stylist selling linen. She got married earlier in early 2021, so it looks like Bianca is living her best life!
