Jasmine Barros
Dump Truck Operator, Tropicana

When Jasmine Barros started at Macmahon, she'd never driven anything close to the size of a haul truck. A year later, she's running ore from the pit to the crushers at the Tropicana Gold Mine - and loving it.

Jasmine joined Macmahon as a trainee in 2025 and is now a qualified Dump Truck Operator on a Surface Mining crew. Her shift starts before sunrise, with pre-start checks before she heads to the pit and into her haul cycles.

“It’s a pretty big machine and a big responsibility, but it’s also an amazing job.”

The biggest challenge when she started was simply the scale of everything – a far cry from anything she’d driven before. Macmahon’s training program changed that quickly.

“I’d never driven anything this big before, but the training program taught me everything I needed to know. With the support from the trainers and the other operators, you build confidence pretty quickly.”

What keeps her engaged isn’t just the scale of the machines – it’s the sense of teamwork and the satisfaction of knowing every load matters.

“I enjoy the teamwork and the sense of achievement. Every load you move is part of keeping the whole operation running.”

Her advice to anyone thinking about a career in mining is straightforward.

“Go for it. Be willing to learn, ask questions, and focus on safety. If you put the effort in, the opportunities are there.”

Jasmine’s story is a step in the right direction – a trainee given the tools, the training and the team to turn an unfamiliar job into an amazing one.
