Stephen began his career at Macmahon as a trainee dump truck operator in the production team, later transitioning to operating water carts. It was his uncle—someone he looks up to and admires—who encouraged him to strive for more.
With a desire to upskill, Stephen explored opportunities in maintenance and secured a role as a serviceman. This new challenge sparked a strong interest in heavy diesel mechanics and fuelled his ambition to take part in Macmahon’s apprenticeship program.
While Stephen’s path wasn’t without challenges—applying three times before being accepted—his determination paid off. Now in his third year of the apprenticeship, Stephen is on track to achieve his long-term goal of completing the program and eventually starting his own mechanical business.
Stephen attributes much of his success to the supportive environment within Macmahon’s Maintenance team.
Everyone here feels like family. We help each other out, and there’s always respect. No question is ever too silly, and that’s helped me learn so much about HD fitter servicing.”
Stephen has gained hands-on experience with a wide range of mining equipment, including the CAT 793F, Hitachi EA5000, CAT Dozer D11 and D10, Sandvik and CAT drills, and Liebherr Diggers 9800 and 996.
One of the most valuable lessons Stephen has learned is to embrace challenges and view mistakes as opportunities for growth.
The feedback I’ve received has helped me improve my skills and become more effective in my role.”
Stephen’s aspirations don’t stop with completing his apprenticeship. He’s eager to expand his knowledge and aspires to one day step into a supervisory role.
Beyond his own career, Stephen is passionate about paving the way for others.
Macmahon has given me a life-changing pathway to better myself for the future. I want to be a role model for the next generation of First Nations people. It’s never too late to start and build a career. If I can do it, you can too.”
Stephen’s story reflects the values Macmahon holds dear—empowering employees, fostering a supportive community, and creating opportunities for meaningful career growth.
We’re proud to support Stephen and many others like him on their journeys, and we’re excited to see all he will accomplish in the future.
