Leon has been with Macmahon for almost a year, working as an Underground Helper. Each shift opens with the same ritual – a motorbike ride to the site access road, then straight into the pre-start meeting at the site office, where the day’s work conditions, production targets and safety priorities are laid out for the crew.
“I always try to ask for the details, because small coordination like this is crucial. One piece of inaccurate information can have a huge impact on safety.”
It’s a habit Leon takes seriously. The questions he asks at pre-start are the small steps that keep the whole shift on the right track, and that mindset carries underground with him.
Before any work begins below, he checks in with the person in charge or his supervisor and sets up the safe-area barriers. Only then does the day’s task begin. Today, that means supporting the jumbo operators – making sure every piece of equipment is functioning properly so the drilling crew can do their job safely and efficiently.
“Making sure all the equipment is functioning properly isn’t just a procedure, it’s a commitment to working safely and going home safely.”
Leon’s story reflects what Step In The Right Direction means in practice at Macmahon’s International underground operations, a culture where safety is the foundation, where every question matters, and where going home safely is the measure of a good day’s work.
