Bill McKenna’s Journey Through the Ranks at Macmahon
Celebrating 20 years

This month, we’re proud to celebrate a remarkable milestone – Bill McKenna’s 20-year anniversary with Macmahon. Over two decades, Bill has grown from a hands-on fitter to a key player in our maintenance operations, all while embodying the values that make Macmahon what it is today.

Bill first joined Macmahon back in the early 1990s when we took over FK Kanny, but it was in 2005 that he officially returned as a Fitter at Ellendale Diamond Mine. From there, his journey has taken him across the country – working in roles from Drill fitter to Supervisor, to now leading the charge in Perth as our Components Controller.

I came back to Macmahon because I’d worked with them before and enjoyed the people and the work. That’s always been the reason I stayed – good crews, good culture, and the work keeps evolving.”

In his early years, Bill quickly stepped up to lead workshops and supervise crews. Whether running the workshop at Argyle Diamond Mine, helping set up new sites at Ore Body 24 and 18, or keeping the wheels turning at Tropicana, Bill’s adaptability and willingness to jump in – tools in hand – never went unnoticed.

“A lot of the promotions early on were just someone needing to step up – and I was always happy to do that. Even as a Supervisor, I liked getting back on the tools and working alongside the crew.”

In 2023, Bill took on a completely new challenge – moving off-site and into a Perth-based role as Components Controller.

It’s been a whole new experience for me. Every day I’m learning something – about systems, suppliers, how the business works behind the scenes. The team here is supportive, and I really enjoy that side of the job.”

Bill now plays a vital role in keeping our operations moving by ensuring repaired components and spare parts are delivered where and when they’re needed most. It’s a behind-the-scenes job that makes a big impact on-site performance.

“My role supports the maintenance side – making sure we’ve got the right parts and everything’s done cost effectively. It’s about helping the team on-site keep our equipment running.”

After nearly 16 years of FIFO, Bill says one of the best changes is being home every night with his family.

“It’s great to be with my grandchildren more and have that balance. I’ve had a good career, and I still enjoy the work. I feel like I’m contributing and open to wherever I can be useful next.”

From leading workshops to managing components and everything in between, Bill has done it all – and we’re lucky to have him.

Congratulations Bill, on 20 incredible years with Macmahon.
