Now signed off with her Certificate III in Surface Extraction and working as a Dump Truck Operator at the Telfer Gold Mine, Emma has built a career that fits her life – and proved to herself she had the resilience to make FIFO work.
“I realised I’d made the right choice after a few months. Everything started clicking, I made friends, everyone was really nice, and I fit in easily.”
The culture on site is something she comes back to often. The team became one of the reasons she stayed.
“The culture here feels like family.”
What Emma is most proud of is her resilience – being able to make FIFO work alongside the life she wants outside the job. Her passions are gym sessions, running, cooking and baking, and the roster gives her the time to chase them.
“I’m proud of how resilient I am, and I love how rewarding my job is.”
On site, she feels supported. Management listens, and that matters to her.
“I felt valued at work when management listened and supported me.”
Her advice to anyone weighing up a similar leap is direct.
“If you’re thinking about joining us, I’d say give it a go. Take a leap. It’s challenging, but it’s really rewarding.”
Emma’s path from trainee to qualified operator is exactly what Macmahon’s Surface Mining career pathways are built to deliver – the training, the support, and the chance to prove what you’re capable of.
