Kieren Munrowd-Harris
Mining Engineer – King of the Hills

Kieren joined Macmahon’s Graduate Program in 2022 at Mt Morgans Gold Mine, where he dove into the world of open-pit mining, heavy surface equipment, and production cycle activities. His curiosity and passion for problem-solving, combined with his love for math and science, initially guided him toward a career in engineering.

While Kieren studied petroleum engineering at university, he decided to transition into mining to contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.

Engineering gave me the opportunity to apply my interest in math and science, and mining lets me contribute to a better future.”

Since those early days, Kieren has flourished at KOTH. As a qualified Mining Engineer, he now plays a key role in mine planning and drill-and-blast operations, areas he found fascinating even as a graduate. His ability to combine technical expertise with practical problem-solving has made him an integral part of the team.

“I enjoy the variety in my role. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities to learn and grow,” Kieren shares.

Kieren’s progression reflects his determination and the guidance he has received along the way. At Mt Morgans, Mining Engineer Maryam Abedinpour played a pivotal role in his development, teaching him the fundamentals of drill-and-blast and how to formalise his designs. Today, Kieren pays it forward by mentoring newer graduates and sharing his knowledge with others on the team.

He’s also an active member of the KOTH Emergency Response Team (ERT), honing his understanding of mine site emergency protocols.

“Being part of the ERT has been an excellent way to broaden my knowledge and gain a deeper appreciation for safety and emergency management,” Kieren explains.

When asked about his journey so far, Kieren credits the supportive culture at Macmahon for much of his success.

“People across departments are always willing to share their knowledge and help me improve,” he says. “I work closely with Hadi and Murry, both of whom have been fantastic mentors, guiding me to make better decisions and deliver great results.”

For aspiring engineers, Kieren has some sage advice:

Study something you’re truly passionate about, something you’ll enjoy learning. And remember, engineering is all about problem-solving, so don’t be afraid to explore different pathways as you go.”

Thanks for sharing your journey with us, Kieren. We’re proud to have you on the team!
