From navigating unpredictable weather to fostering a strong site culture, Shannon Mckay-Borg plays a key role in ensuring Decmil’s projects run smoothly. Currently, based at Ison Road, he shares insights into his career, the challenges of the job, and what keeps him motivated.

Shannon’s journey with Decmil began in 2010 when the company he was working for was acquired by Decmil. Now, with Decmil’s recent acquisition by Macmahon, he sees new opportunities for the business. “Having Macmahon’s financial strength behind us provides stability and growth opportunities, which is great for the team and the future of Decmil. It’s an exciting time to be part of the company.”

Shannon’s work spans across a diverse range of civil infrastructure projects, from bridges and roads to overpasses. Each project presents its own set of challenges, but for Shannon,  the toughest hurdles are often those beyond his control. “Dealing with bad weather is the hardest part of the job. When things go wrong due to circumstances outside of your control, finding solutions can be difficult. But the usual challenges that come with construction are much easier to handle when you have a great team around you.”

Ensuring that jobs are completed on time and within budget is a crucial part of his role. However, he also focuses on something just as important—building a strong site culture.

“People enjoying their work is key. When you have a great site culture, it makes a big difference—not just to morale but also to how well the team works together. That’s something that adds to Decmil’s brand and reputation.”

Over the years, Shannon has developed a range of new skills, but one stands out the most. “Public speaking. I used to hate it, but now I’m much more confident. That, along with management skills, has really helped me progress in my career.”

A Day at Ison Road

No two days look the same, but every morning starts with a prestart meeting, followed by a walk around site to check on progress and address any early challenges. “Throughout the day, I attend meetings—including our daily planning session for the next day’s work. I also make time to catch up with the CFMEU’s HSR, our engineering team, and management to discuss job progress and upcoming work.”

When asked about career progression, Shannon is proud of his journey so far but remains open to new opportunities. “My goal when I started was to one day become Superintendent. I’m really happy with where I am now, but if the opportunity to progress further comes up, I’d definitely consider it.”

For those thinking about a career with Decmil, his advice is simple:  “We have great people working here, and it’s an enjoyable place to work. If you’re looking for a strong team and a rewarding career, this is the place to be.”

Outside of work, family comes first. “Spending time with my wife, daughter, and family is number one for me. I also love racing and riding my dirt bike and mountain bike.”

At the heart of Shannon’s leadership approach is a belief that a positive work environment leads to better performance. “My aim has always been to create a workplace where people enjoy coming to work. When people like what they do, they’re more engaged and productive. I also believe that having a hobby or passion outside of work is really important for balance.”

With a strong work ethic, a people-first mindset, and a passion for continuous improvement, Shannon is making a real impact at Decmil—one project at a time.
