The company offers a robust and structured graduate development program (SGDP) that is designed to deliver a pathway for people to cultivate leadership, project management and technical capabilities that support the company’s current and future business requirements.
Contingent on the area of expertise, the programs run for two to three years.
The courses are designed to support a range of qualifications including Quarry Managers ticket, First Class Mine Managers ticket or S1, S2, S3 Mine Supervisor Accreditation and G3 Site Supervisors training.
Importantly, each person is assigned a mentor to grow their capabilities and support each graduate in their future career aspirations. In addition, Macmahon provides support through an onsite buddy system throughout the program.
Jovy Li is a Graduate Engineer who is approaching one year at Macmahon. “During the program I was given the opportunity to work at three mine-sites across Australia from the east to the south and finally back home in the west. Now, being a part of the Engineers Australia program, will allow me to be fully recognised as a qualified Engineer anywhere in Australia,” Jovy said.
“I also enjoy the additional perks such as joining the Emergency Response team at the Tropicana Gold Mine which will provide me with nationally accredited first aid certifications,” Jovy added.
“It has allowed me to gain a whole new understanding of the industry. The current group of graduates have bonded really well and I am looking forward to the next 12 months – Lauren
HR Graduate Lauren Ruffo also shared her experience, coming from a HR discipline and working closely with the graduate engineers.
Graduate Mining Engineer, Samuel Gibbs, told of his experience within the program as well. He outlined the benefits he values.
“It has given me the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and experience for personal and professional growth. My graduate program has included experience in open pit mine surveying and short term mine planning at the Telfer Gold and Copper mine. I have really enjoyed the challenges that both roles have offered,” Samuel said.
Samuel described the environment and likeminded people he has experienced at Macmahon and Telfer. “They have been essential to my development and I’m thankful for the time and effort they have all put in to help me grow,” Samuel said.
In October, Samuel is due to rotate into the bomb crew and soon afterwards he will cross into the drill and blast engineering team.
“My long term career aspiration is to become an experienced senior mine engineer and contribute to the development of future graduates,” Samuel shared.
Macmahon’s 2019 intake group are have completed their first job rotations in July and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. At completion of the program the graduates will be empowered with knowledge, skills and experience, performing as valuable members to the Macmahon team.
Macmahon encourages future graduates to invest in their future and transform into proactive professionals that thrive in the exciting industry of mining.
